What is CrossFit?
CrossFit is a workout that is made up of constantly varied, functional movements performed at a high intensity.
I know the words “high intensity” probably just made you curl up inside and maybe put you off, but it’s not that bad. I promise.
We modify workouts based on your experience and go from there.
I’ve been doing CF for about 6 years and I’ve heard it all, people talking shit about CrossFit/the athletes, they could never do it/those kinds of workouts, you name it, I’ve heard it.
I always ask people, “Have you ever played a sport? Soccer? Football? Gymnastics?” If they say yes, I respond, “Then you can do CrossFit.”
Your age, height, weight, does not matter.
Now don’t get me wrong, some workouts are extremely tough and I sometimes catch myself doubting my body’s ability. I wonder how the hell I will be able to do it or a specific movement, especially if I don’t practice that movement a lot.
But, then I get reassurance from my training partners or I find a movement to modify it with and feel much better.
People often ask how I mentally prep or what my strategy is for a workout and most of the time, it depends on the workout, the reps, and the movements.
Before going into a workout, usually about 10 seconds before I start, I tell myself to breathe, focus on one movement at a time, and do the best I can. During the workout, I continue to tell myself to breathe, and push, push through until the end.
In a long workout, I’ll wonder if I’m done yet after about 5 minutes – LOL! But once it is over, yes I’m trying to catch my breath, but I feel a different kind of accomplished, like, “Hell yeah, I just crushed that!” Not all workouts are like that, I have bad days too where I don’t do well and feel absolutely awful and discouraged.
The amazing thing with CrossFit is you are tested with all these different and tough workouts and seeing what your body is really capable of and how strong you are.
CrossFit mentality is kinda like life. You go into an interview, a situation, whatever the case may be, thinking about how you’re going to do, what your strategy is, then when it’s all over you feel a sort of accomplishment. Even if it didn’t end well, you feel some sort of accomplishment. You may have done something better than you thought, confronted a situation better, or even if you’re just glad you got through it. You still did it!
So yes, CrossFit is tough, but you’d be surprised by what you’re able to do!
No matter how old you are, your weight, whatever you feel discouraged by, you still can, it’s never too late to start!
